A young boy was reportedly injured after playing with a Christmas installation at Century Square mall on Dec. 9

The incident happened at around 3pm at the "Merry Magical Igloo" display, Lianhe Zaobao reported.

The "Merry Magical Igloo" display was supposed to be put up from Dec. 9 to 15 on the first floor of the shopping centre in Tampines.

Century Square said the decoration has been removed for safety reasons.

What happened

According to Zaobao, there is a device in the "Merry Magical Igloo" display that makes snowflakes.

Children are tasked to enter the igloo with their eyes covered and search for items.

After finding them, children can exchange the items for prizes.

The boy, understood to be five or six years old, was suspected to have been accidentally cut by this device while participating in a Christmas event.

He was initially taken to a clinic on the fourth floor of the mall for treatment and was later sent to hospital.

Witnesses told 8world News that they heard the boy screaming and his fingers were seen covered in blood.

A part of his finger was reportedly severed, but Zaobao reported that it was only a cut.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed that they received a call for assistance on Dec. 9 at around 3:30pm and brought the boy to KK Women's and Children's Hospital for treatment.

A Century Square spokesperson said assistance was immediately provided to the boy.

Part of decoration closed

The igloo display was taken down the same evening as a safety measure as investigations are ongoing.

The display will remain closed, the mall stated on social media.

"The safety and well-being of our visitors remain our utmost priority," the spokesperson said.

The full extent and cause of the child's injuries are unknown.
