S'porean actor, 23, among 69 participants in K-pop idol survival show 'Starlight Boys'

"Starlight Boys" is a South Korean-Chinese idol survival show that began airing on Oct. 26, 2024.

The show features 69 contestants worldwide, all competing for one of the final nine spots in a new boy group.
Among the contestants is 23-year-old Singaporean actor Yang Yan.
Who is Yang Yan?
Yang Yan is the sole Singaporean contestant on the show.
He is an actor and talent under talent agency NoonTalk Media.
Before joining "Starlight Boys", Yang Yan graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic.
He also worked as a part-time model.
He made his acting debut in Mediacorp's 2023 series "Stranger In The Dark", where he portrayed a science geek.
Yang Yan's performance earned him nominations at the 2024 Star Awards in two categories:
- Most Popular Rising Star
- Best Rising Star
Additionally, Yang Yan released a Chinese song titled “O2 氧气” with NoonTalk artiste Kevin.
Wanted to be a chef
In an interview on "Starlight Boys", he describes himself as a "puppy" who loves making people happy.
Though he enjoys singing and dancing now, his childhood dream was to become a chef.
As time passed, his ambitions shifted toward business and later, programming.
When it comes to comfort food, Yang Yan chose chicken rice as his pick.
Familiar faces
In addition to Yang Yan, the show features other notable contestants.
Among them is Thai actor Pentor Jeerapat, who is also represented by NoonTalk in Singapore and Malaysia.
Other contestants include former Chinese idol survival show "Youth With You" participants Sun Ying Hao, Duan Xing Xing, and Neil Liu, as well as Malaysian contestant Ivan.

Participants in the show come from countries like China, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Canada, and more.
It features a panel of experienced K-pop mentors, including actor Lee Seung Gi, Big Bang's Daesung and The Boyz's Eric.

In the first episode of the show, Yang Yan performed "Fantastic Baby" by Big Bang during the audition round.
In the third episode, the contestants were divided into smaller groups for a performance showcase, covering songs from K-pop groups such as ATEEZ, BTS and NCT Dream.
Yang Yan took part in a cover performance of "Chk Chk Boom" by Stray Kids.
