'US & China stand to gain from cooperation': Xi Jinping congratulates Trump
He also noted the significance of a "stable, healthy and sustainable" China-U.S. relationship.
China's President Xi Jinping has congratulated U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on his election win.
According to a press statement on Nov. 7, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Xi had sent Trump a congratulatory message and noted the significance of a "stable, healthy and sustainable" China-U.S. relationship.
"Both countries stand to gain from cooperation": Xi
In his congratulatory message, Xi highlighted that "both countries stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation", referring to the countries' history.
He added that a China-U.S. relationship with "stable, healthy and sustainable development" serves the common interests of the two countries.
Xi said that such a relationship will also meet the expectations of the international community.
He also expressed his hope for the two countries to boost dialogue and communication, properly manage differences and expand mutually beneficial cooperation out of "mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation".
He added that U.S. and China should "find the right way to get along with each other" for the benefit of all countries.
China Vice President Han Zheng had also sent a congratulatory message to his U.S. counterpart Vice President-elect JD Vance on his election win.
"Willing to cooperate to benefit both countries": China on U.S. tariffs
On potential tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Chinese imports, a spokesperson from China's commerce ministry announced at a press conference that the country is willing to "expand cooperation" to benefit both countries.
Reuters reported that the ministry also said that it is willing to work together with the U.S. to boost economic and trade ties.
Trump has said that he will be implementing "stiff tariffs".
During his previous term, he had imposed tariffs of 30 to 50 per cent on almost all Chinese imports, amounting to US$550 billion (S$735 billion).
This led to higher costs for American businesses and higher prices for the American consumer.
