Woman, 19, found dead inside walk-in bakery oven at Canada Walmart by her mum who also worked there
The store has been closed since the discovery on Oct. 19.
A 19-year-old woman was found dead inside a walk-in bakery oven at a Walmart store in Halifax, Canada.
The gruesome discovery of the woman, identified as Gursiman Kaur, was made on Oct. 19 by her mother who also worked there while the store was still open, according to Canadian media.
Worked at Walmart store for two years
Both mother and daughter had been working at the Walmart store for two years.
The Maritime Sikh Society — a community organisation for Sikhs living in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia — said the community was in shock over the incident and that the immediate family is traumatised.
According to the society, Kaur and her mother had moved to Canada within the past three years from the UK.
Both of them were originally from India and their father and brother are still living there.
The society confirmed that Kaur's father has received a visa on compassionate grounds to go to Canada.
Her brother is also making arrangements to go over.
Store shut since incident
The store has remained shut since the incident, with no news of a reopening date.
In response to media queries, Walmart said on Oct. 20 that it was deeply saddened by the employee's death and the store remained closed until further notice for further investigation and for employees to process the situation.
The Halifax Regional Police was further quoted as saying that the investigation could take a significant amount of time.
A police spokesperson added: "The investigation is very complex. And our investigators are working very diligently along those assisting agencies. And so to provide a timeline would be not possible at this time."
However, a fundraiser said the woman "was found burned to death in the walk-in oven at Walmart bakery".
On the day of the incident, Kaur’s mother tried to find her daughter after not seeing her for one hour.
She asked around and tried to call her to no avail.
“Mother started panicking as it was unusual for [Kaur] to switch her phone off during the day,” the fundraiser added.
Candlelight vigil held outside store
On Nov. 3, a candlelight vigil was held outside the store, with more than 100 people in attendance, CBC News reported.
Candles were placed on the ground beside a memorial of flowers and cards in front of the store cordoned off by yellow tape.
One of the attendees who knew Kaur described her as a "very kind girl", according to CBC News.
Kaur's mother did not attend the vigil.
Walmart released another statement on Nov. 3, saying it has been a difficult time for Kaur's family, the community and the store's staff.
The company added, "We are working towards understanding how this tragic event occurred."
