TelegramWhatsappRepublican candidate Donald Trump has edged closer to victory in the 2024 election, as the Associated Press calls North Carolina for the former president.

AP now has Trump on 230 electoral votes, with 270 EVs needed to secure victory. North Carolina has 16.

His opponent, Democrat Kamala Harris is on 203 EVs, but with a handful of states that are likely to go her way yet to be called, such as Minnesota and Hawaii.

AP said that its call was based on a number of factors, mainly that 90 per cent of the votes in the state had been counted, with voter turnout in areas expected to be pro-Trump higher than previous elections, and turnout in areas critical for Harris lower.

This means there are six swing states left to contest, but some outlets such as The New York Times are downbeat on Harris' chances of winning.

NYT has Harris projected to lose all the remaining six states, which would be a decisive electoral college victory for Trump, even if it does not result in an overall popular vote victory for him.

Meanwhile, betting site Polymarket has clearly made up its mind over who will win: as of 1pm on Nov. 6, it has Trump at 97.2 per cent chance of winning.
