President Tharman says S'pore looking forward to working closely with President-elect Trump
Singapore is ready to work with President Trump.
President Tharman Shanmugaratnam has commented on President-elect Donald Trump's emphatic victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
President Tharman said in a Facebook post on Nov. 6:
"Americans have voted in [favour] of President Trump. He will lead a nation in need of healing, and a people who must rediscover common purpose, despite their divisions.
No one can expect this to be achieved easily or quickly. It is an immense task, for government and every level of society. But President Trump pledged in his victory speech to work every day and with every breath for every citizen, their families, and their future."
Trump victory
Trump beat Vice President Kamala Harris on Nov. 6 (Singapore time), securing at least 295 electoral votes, according to AP projections.
With over 95 per cent of the ballots tabulated, Trump received over 72.5 million votes, more than Harris's 67.8 million.
Trump sealed his win by winning key swing states, like Pennsylvania, Michigan and Georgia.
Harris conceded the election to Trump, while President Joe Biden congratulated Trump and invited him to the White House to discuss the transition of power.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong congratulated Trump on Nov. 6, sending a letter and said Singapore is ready to work closely with his new administration.
President Tharman repeated the sentiment, saying in his Facebook post:
"America also plays a critical role in a world that aspires for peace for all peoples, and for nations large and small being able to prosper together.
Singapore has had a deep and enduring relationship with the US. We look forward to working actively with President Trump and his team to achieve our mutual interests in an interdependent world."
