A St Joseph's Institution (SJI) International student has died while abroad on a school trip to Maldives.
The incident occurred near the island of Dhigurah, located southwest of Maldives' capital Male, reported CNA.
Maldivian news outlet The Edition reported that the teenager, 15, who was in the Maldives as part of a whale shark research project, was "hit by the propeller of a running boat" as they were diving into the sea on a snorkeling trip.
The child was "immediately transferred" to a local health centre, but was tragically pronounced dead upon arrival.
School confirms incident
SJI International's Chief Executive Officer Michael Johnston confirmed the young teen's passing in a statement issued to CNA on Nov. 8.
"It is with deep sadness that we confirm the passing of one of our students during a recent overseas school research trip. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the family during this difficult time. The school community is mourning our tragic loss, and we are providing all possible support to the family."
Mothership has reached out to SJI International for more information.
