SJI International student who died in Maldives identified as S'porean girl, 15
She was on a National Youth Achievement Award overseas expedition to the Maldives.
The St. Joseph's Institution (SJI) International student who died while abroad on a school trip to the Maldives has been identified as 15-year-old Jenna Chan.
In response to Mothership's queries, SJI International's chief executive officer, Michael Johnston, shared that Chan was a Grade 9 student on a National Youth Achievement Award overseas expedition to the Maldives.
"Our hearts go out to Jenna's family, friends, and the entire school community during this tragic time," said Johnston.
Johnston told Mothership that Chan's family, along with a team led by the principal, had travelled to Malé, the capital of the Maldives.
The team will provide immediate support to the family, students and staff.
The school has also activated grief support and counselling services on campus for its students, Johnston added.
"As investigations are currently underway by the Maldivian authorities, we are unable to provide further information at this time," he said.
"Our priority remains supporting Jenna's family and our students and staff through this difficult time."
Part of whale shark research project
The Maldivian news outlet The Edition reported on Nov. 8, 2024, that a teenager, 15, who was in the Maldives as part of a whale shark research project, was "hit by the propeller of a running boat" as they were diving into the sea on a snorkelling trip.
The child was "immediately transferred" to a local health centre but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
