Pipe leak along Sims Ave causes 'mini fountain'

Water was gushing out up to a metre high after a pipe leak at 24 Sims Avenue near the junction of Lorong 3 Geylang at around 3:30am on Nov. 15.

The scene was caught on camera by a passerby surnamed Lan (transliteration from Chinese), and the footage was subsequently shared with Shin Min Daily News.

According to the video, which was taken at around 4am, water could be seen accumulating and streaming along the road.

When Lan visited the scene again around two hours later, he saw a few workers from PUB, Singapore's national water agency, attending to the leak.

Lan added that the situation had been controlled and the leak "did not cause any congestion" as it occurred during the early hours on Friday.

Lanes cordoned off

According to a Shin Min report from Nov. 16, the reporter said that no water streams were seen when they visited the scene of the incident.

Around nine PUB workers were seen conducting repair works.

The water had gushed out of a manhole cover about 1m wide, and workers had surrounded it with sand.

Three lanes that were affected by the repair works were temporarily cordoned off by the authorities.

Several auxiliary police officers from Certis were seen directing traffic.

In response to Mothership's queries, PUB confirmed it was alerted to the leak on Nov. 15.

"We immediately dispatched our service on-site, and the leak was isolated at around 5:30am," said PUB.

PUB added that the water supply in the surrounding area was not affected.

To facilitate ongoing repair works, PUB temporarily closed the middle lane of Sims Avenue (towards Sims Way) and the left lane of Lorong 3 Geylang (towards Upper Boon Keng Road).

"PUB is investigating the cause of the leak," read the statement.

In an update issued on Nov. 17, PUB said it had completed repairs on the damaged pipe at around 2am.

PUB subsequently carried out road reinstatement works and reopened the aforementioned lanes at 3:15pm.
