Man tried to rape Thai disco singer at Tiong Bahru car park after sending her home
The prosecution said the man had "completely no remorse".
A 28-year-old man was found guilty of two counts of attempted rape and one count of attempted sexual assault.
The case
Yeo Zhuo Ping was 22 when he tried to rape a Thai disco singer.
The incident happened on Aug. 7, 2018.He was found guilty on Aug. 20, 2024.
Yeo met the victim, who cannot be named due to a gag order, at Thai disco Pixie Bar at Concorde Shopping Centre on Aug. 6 night.
The victim had just started her shift.
Yeo bought her a garland and so the victim entertained him at his table.
She drank about four to five glasses of beer.
Yeo and the victim left the bar at around 3am on Aug. 7.
She had a flight to catch later that day and Yeo had offered to send her home.
Alighting at a multi-storey car park at Block 125A Kim Tian Road, Yeo suddenly pulled the victim towards a staircase landing.
He proceeded to hug and kiss her.
The victim tried to escape but he held on to her.
Yeo then pushed the victim into a small room at the staircase landing and attempted to rape her twice.
He also tried to force her to perform oral sex on him.
The victim resisted and begged him to let her go.
According to Shin Min Daily News, the victim later testified that Yeo suddenly appeared to be frightened and left the area.
She then called her boyfriend for help, and subsequently, lodged a police report.
A medical examination on Aug. 17, 2018 revealed that the victim had sustained abrasions on her arms and legs.
She also had injuries that were consistent with sexual assault.
The trial
During the trial on Nov. 18, 2024, the deputy public prosecutor said Yeo had “completely no remorse”.
According to The Straits Times, Yeo claimed that the victim had made false allegations against him in order to stay in Singapore during the course of the investigations.
He also claimed that the police fabricated his statements that contained an admission that he tried to have sex with the victim.
“So everyone has lied in this court except him, Your Honour. He is an angel,” replied the deputy public prosecutor.
The prosecution added that Yeo's lawyer had asked the victim if she provided sexual services during a cross examination.
The deputy public prosecutor responded:
"So what if she is a Thai disco singer? She is here to earn an honest living. She is not a prostitute, she is not his social escort where sexual advances would be welcome.”
Yeo also claimed that he had knocked his head during the incident and lost consciousness.
This was rejected by the judge who noted that a medical examination found no head injury sustained.
While out on bail, Yeo was charged with drink-driving and dangerous driving.
He pleaded guilty to these charges on Nov. 18, 2024.
He will return to court on Dec. 6 for sentencing.
