A 59-year-old man was found dead at his residential unit at Block 206A Punggol Place on Nov. 13 afternoon.

According to the deceased's neighbour, he had lived alone after moving to the Housing and Development Board (HDB) block around eight years ago, reported Shin Min Daily News.

The neighbour said he had "never seen any of the deceased's family or friends swinging by the latter's flat to visit him".

Uncollected food found at deceased's unit

When Shin Min reporters arrived at the scene of the incident, the deceased's flat had already been cordoned off.

Several police officers were at the scene conducting investigations.

The deceased was seen lying in the flat's living room.

However, the foul smell coming out from his flat was reportedly "not very strong".

Additionally, the reporters saw two food containers and an orange hanging at the gate of the deceased's unit.

It is believed that a volunteer who brought the food to the flat alerted the police after noticing the deceased did not collect the previous day's delivery, Shin Min reported.

Deceased 'suffered from health condition': neighbour

A neighbour of the deceased, surnamed Hu (transliteration from Chinese), told Shin Min that the deceased "suffered from a health condition".

As a result, he "could not work" and "had to rely on financial assistance from the government" to pay for his living expenses.

Every day, volunteers would drop by the deceased's flat to send him meals, added Hu.

Hu recounted that the deceased had previously shared that he had a pacemaker.

"He also experienced difficulty breathing due to his heart problems multiple times. While he thought he would die on those occasions, he was saved on time every time," recounted Hu.

Last seen on Nov. 11

According to Hu, the deceased visited him last week to ask for ingredients, including garlic and chili peppers, reported Shin Min.

Hu added that the deceased met a friend on Nov. 11, three days before his body was found.

"My friend told me that the deceased had asked for his help with the latter's financial assistance application. The two of them also went shopping at a supermarket afterwards," shared Hu.

Police statement

In response to Mothership's queries, the Singapore Police Force confirmed they were alerted to the case of unnatural death at around 1:40pm on Nov. 13.

The man was found lying motionless in his unit and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Based on preliminary investigations, the police do not suspect foul play.

Police investigations are ongoing.
