Vice President Kamala Harris has conceded the 2024 U.S. presidential election to Donald Trump.

Harris called Trump to formally concede, before delivering a speech at her alma mater, Howard University.

She urged her supporters to accept the loss and committed to a peaceful transfer of power to Trump, AP reported.

"The outcome of this election is not what we wanted, not what we fought for, not what we voted for,” Harris said.

“But hear me when I say, the light of America’s promise will always burn bright, as long as we never give up and as long as we keep fighting.”

As vice president, Harris will have to certify her own electoral defeat, as Al Gore did in 2001.

Trump supporters assailed the Capitol during the certification process on Jan. 6, 2021, but were ultimately unsuccessful in preventing Republican Mike Pence from certifying Joe Biden as the victor over Trump.

Trump refused to concede after the 2020 election, making unsubstantiated claims of "vote rigging."

Harris had words of encouragement for her supporters in her speech.

“While I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that [fuelled] this campaign."

“I will never give up a fight for a future where Americans can pursue their dreams ambitions and aspirations,” she said, adding that America will never give up the fight for their democracy.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden congratulated Trump and invited him to the White House to discuss the transition process.
