Workers' Party releases documentary film about history of Hougang
The film features interviews with former Hougang MPs.
The Workers' Party (WP) released an 83-minute documentary film, "后港 Hougang: The Documentary", on YouTube.
The release of the film on Nov. 3, 2024 coincides with the 67th anniversary of WP, founded on Nov. 3, 1957.
The film is in English, Mandarin, Teochew and Hokkien.
According to WP, it "celebrates Hougang’s rich history and highlights its significant role in Singapore's political and cultural landscape".
The film is divided into six chapters, and looks at Hougang's origins as a settlement of Teochew immigrants from China, as well as the history of WP's presence there.
The third and fourth chapters of the film, for instance, focus on the 1991 General Election, and how WP set up a new town council in Hougang.
WP previously said the film was shown in private screenings, but would be uploaded to YouTube on Nov. 3 for the public to watch free-of-charge.
WP member Lee Li Lian said:
“In many ways, this film captures not just the story of Hougang, but also the spirit that defines this community. The journey of Hougang’s Teochew immigrants echoes the broader Singapore story — one of resilience, courage, and the kampung spirit that binds us together.
What stands out about Hougang is the unwavering belief in standing up for what is right and supporting one another, especially the less fortunate. As this film reaches a wider audience, we hope it reminds Singaporeans of the deep bonds we share, and the importance of honouring our history. To the people of Hougang, past and present, thank you for your trust, belief, and partnership over the years.”
Interviews
WP added that the film will feature interviews with past and present Hougang residents from different walks of life.
Some of the interviewees also include Low Thia Khiang, who was the former Secretary-General of WP and the former MP for Hougang from 1991 to 2011, Png Eng Huat, who was the former MP for Hougang from 2012 to 2020, and Dennis Tan, who is the current MP for Hougang since 2020.
Others interviewed include historians and WP leaders.
