Girl falls 4 floors to her death in China shopping mall after sitting on escalator's handrail
The incident is under investigation by the police.
A girl in China fell four floors to her death inside a newly-opened shopping mall in Jining in Shandong province on Nov. 16.
Waiting in line for restaurant
The girl was seen standing at the corner of an escalator and a guardrail while waiting in line for a restaurant, according to Malaysia media China Press.
Media in China reported that the girl was 14 years old, based on comments by internet users.
A video clip showed that at one point, she could be seen hoisting herself up to sit on the escalator's handrail.
However, she was unable to maintain her balance and ended up slipping through the opening between the escalator and guardrail.
China Press further reported that the guardrail's glass panel was knocked down as a result of the girl slipping.
A photo showed umbrellas being used to shield the girl's body from the public's view in the aftermath of the accident.
The girl was subsequently rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead.
The local police are investigating the specific cause of the incident.
Mall had just opened on Nov. 2
Media in China reported that the shopping mall had only just opened on Nov. 2.
In addition, it had also undergone a safety inspection 10 days prior to the incident.
At that time, the inspection by the police was primarily focused on the mall's manpower, emergency response, safety management and its monitoring equipment.
