The founder of local curry puff business, Tip Top Curry Puff, died on Oct. 28, 2024.
According to Shin Min Daily News, Looi San Cheng passed away at home due to a heart attack, aged 80.
Looi's daughter, Liang, told the Chinese media that her father had suffered from the “three highs” of medical conditions: high blood sugar, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
He had also been taking long-term medication for high blood pressure.
She added that her father never complained about the pain, so the family was shocked by his passing.
"He didn't like to trouble others, so he didn't tell us even if he was sick. His death was very sudden for us," she said.
Legacy
Tip Top Curry Puff began in 1979, serving their handmade curry puffs at Block 722 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8.
Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong praised the business during his 2006 National Day Rally Speech as an example of Singaporean companies doing well overseas.
Before starting the curry puff business, Liang said her father started out as an electrician and a contractor.
Liang added that her grandfather may have influenced her father as they were from Hainan, and her grandfather used to run a coffee shop: "My father loves to eat and is also good at cooking Western dishes."
According to Shin Min, Tip Top Curry Puff sold over 5,000 curry puffs daily, and its net profits exceeded S$1 million over six years.
The brand became a joint venture in 2011, according to the daughter.
The outlets are located in Changi Airport Terminal 1, One Raffles Place, Bugis Junction, Compass One, Tampines Century Square and E!Hub@Downtown East.
