Police report lodged after fake Plaza Singapura Facebook page advertised discounted Labubu dolls
Boooo.
A police report has been filed after a fake Facebook page, purporting to represent Plaza Singapura, advertised discounted Labubu dolls for sale.
The page encouraged customers to click a link to purchase the limited edition series, “The Monsters Fall In Wild Series,” at a discount.
This link ultimately led to a site asking for users' personal information.
Scam page
The fraudulent Facebook page displayed a photo of a crowd outside a Pop Mart store, falsely claiming that people queued for six hours at Plaza Singapura on Nov. 11 to buy the dolls.
However, the image did not appear to be taken at Plaza Singapura’s Pop Mart outlet.
The page claimed that due to “unexpectedly high demand,” not all customers could buy the dolls and announced online sales for customers to “enjoy the promotional offer.”
The dolls were supposedly available for S$89 each, compared to the official Pop Mart price of S$109.90, where they are currently sold out both online and in Pop Mart stores across Singapore.
The link directed users to a page requesting their credentials.
Police report made
In response to queries by Mothership, a Plaza Singapura spokesperson said it is aware of parties fraudulently impersonating the mall on social media.
“These accounts are not related to Plaza Singapura or CapitaLand in any way," said the spokesperson, adding that they have reported the case to Meta and have also lodged a police report.
Shoppers were asked to refer to Plaza Singapura’s official website for more details on events and promotions happening at the mall.
To report fake accounts, or verify the authenticity of accounts and messages, shoppers are encouraged to contact CapitaLand at [email protected].
The rise of Labubu
The popularity of Labubu dolls surged after K-pop star Lisa from Blackpink shared photos of herself with one of the dolls in April.
The doll has been loved greatly in Singapore as well, with fans doing all sorts of things to get their hands on one.
