U.S. President-elect Donald Trump announced on Nov. 12 that Elon Musk, the head of Tesla Motors and the owner of X (formerly Twitter), will lead a newly created Department of Government Efficiency.
Trump announced on Nov. 13 (Singapore time) that Musk will lead the new department with former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.
Trump said that Musk and Ramaswamy "will pave the way for my administration to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies".
Trump added that their work would conclude by Jul. 4, 2026, stating that a smaller, more efficient government would be a "gift" to the country.
The acronym for the new department will be DOGE, coinciding with the cryptocurrency that Musk promotes, Dogecoin.
DOGE will be driving changes by providing advice and guidance from "outside of the government", according to Trump's statement.
In Trump's statement, Musk said it would "send shockwaves through the system and anyone involved in government waste".
He likened the new government initiative to "potentially 'The Manhattan Project' of our time", referencing the building of the atomic bomb during World War Two.

In a separate tweet, Musk also suggested "a leaderboard for most insanely dumb spending of [Americans'] tax dollars".
All actions of the Department of Government Efficiency will be posted online for maximum transparency.
Anytime the public thinks we are cutting something important or not cutting something wasteful, just let us know!
We will also have a leaderboard for most insanely dumb… https://t.co/1c0bAlxmY0
