6 persons, aged 17-20, plead guilty to errant cycling in Orchard
The cyclists will be back in court again.
The six cyclists who filmed themselves riding errantly along Scotts Road and Orchard Road in May 2024 pleaded guilty to their respective charges on Nov. 19.
As the accused are either minors or young adults, the court called for probation suitability reports for all of them, reported CNA.
The judge is expected to mete out the sentences on Jan. 9, 2025, after taking into consideration their probation suitability reports.
Part of 9-person group
According to CNA, the six cyclists comprised Ahmad Noordinie Mohamed Noorshah, 19, Muhammad Irfan Muhamad Noor, 19, Muhaidy Marhady, 20, and Muhammad Aliyul Qadry Mohamad Razak, 20.
The other two members could not be named as they were 17 years old at the time of their offences.
During court proceedings, the deputy public prosecutor said the cyclists were part of a nine-person group.
However, the identities of the other three group members were not revealed, according to CNA.
What happened in May
On May 10 night, the group met at Bukit Panjang MRT station and brought along their bicycles, reported CNA.
They subsequently began cycling along Bukit Timah Road, Stevens Road, Orchard Road, and Lau Pa Sat to Jurong.
When they were riding along Orchard Road, one of the 17-year-olds decided to record a video of the group.
To do so, he took his hand off the handlebar to hold his phone.
What footage showed
According to the prosecution, Noordinie was seen in the video riding his bicycle with its front wheel off the ground, reported CNA.
Aliyul cycled with both hands off the handlebars.
Later on, he was also seen riding between vehicles with a 17-year-old cyclist, who was still recording the group at the time.
Some group members were also seen riding on the second and third lanes of the road before the group made a stop at a traffic light at the junction outside Taste Orchard in the Somerset area.
Footage posted online by cyclist
The Singapore Police Force (SPF) were notified of the group's antics along Orchard Road at around 11pm on May 10.
The group went on their separate ways at around 4am the next day.
However, their actions soon gained traction online after footage of them cycling began circulating on social media.
During court proceedings, it was revealed that Aliyul posted the video on TikTok after receiving it from the 17-year-old.
All pleaded guilty
All six cyclists pleaded guilty to failing to cycle on the left side of the road, according to CNA.
Specifically, Aliyul also admitted to failing to ride in an orderly manner by cycling without holding the handlebars and between stationary vehicles, not wearing a helmet, and using a bicycle that did not have a working handbrake.
Likewise, Noordinie and the 17-year-old who took the video of the group pleaded guilty to failing to ride in an orderly manner as well.
The teen also admitted to using his phone to record a video while cycling.
