Cleaner uses broom to clean Yishun coffee shop ceiling, diners complain
The person in charge said cleaning after the closing hour at 11pm would be "a bit inconvenient".
When is the right time to clean the ceiling of a coffee shop?
To 61-year-old taxi driver Zhu Yuan Ming (transliteration), it's not in the middle of the day when diners are eating.
Zhu had visited a coffee shop at Block 504 Yishun Street 51 for a meal at approximately 3pm on Nov. 23 when he encountered a cleaner using a broom to sweep the ceiling, reported Shin Min.
According to Zhu, visible specks of dust started to fall from the ceiling.
"I had just purchased a bowl of noodles and was about to eat it when the cleaner started sweeping the ceiling. I thought that it was very unhygienic, and informed the manager," Zhu shared with Shin Min.
He said the area was then cordoned off with plastic tape, and the cleaners continued cleaning.
He said he went to the authorities after that.
"Not many diners in the afternoon"
Wu Fu Ping (transliteration), 65, who is in charge of cleaning, shared with a Shin Min reporter that the ceiling is cleaned once a month.
The area that is being cleaned will be cordoned off with tape to separate the cleaning area from other diners, he added.
"There aren't many people in the afternoon, so the cleaning work is carried out then."
Wu added that on the day Zhu gave his feedback, other customers were unaffected and seated away from the cordoned area.
Those in the cleaning area were stall assistants, Wu said.
While the areas were separated, "dust would still spread," quipped Zhu, suggesting that cleaning should be done after closing hours.
"Coffee shop closes at 11pm"
Other diners in the area resonated with Zhu's concerns when asked by Shin Min, with many agreeing that cleaning should be done after closing hours instead.
Acknowledging these sentiments, Wu admitted that there was room for improvement.
However, he also noted that the coffee shop closes at 11pm, and such an arrangement would be "a bit inconvenient", explaining their decision to clean in the afternoon.
