Golden Mile Food Centre stall sells S$3 Taiwanese drumstick set to minimise food wastage
Budget meal.
Fancy some Taiwanese cai fan for S$3?
That's how much a Taiwanese mixed rice stall in Golden Mile Food Centre is charging for a budget-conscious chicken drumstick rice set, which aims to help customers save money and reduce food wastage.
The stall, "Taiwan Fan Bao", which opened in October 2023, offers a variety of Taiwanese-style dishes to go with rice.
It is known for its generous portions and hearty food.
S$3 budget set to prevent food wastage: Owner
The owner, surnamed Wang (transliteration), told Shin Min Daily News that her stall typically serves up full-priced sets — such as braised meat or sardines with rice — which are priced from S$5 to S$8.50.
Her best-seller, according to Wang, would be her S$5 chicken drumstick rice set.
But while the sets sold well, Wang noticed that some customers with smaller appetites would not be able to finish their meal.
So, in a bid to prevent food wastage, Wang launched a S$3 version of the chicken drumstick rice set in July.
In terms of portion size, it is similar to the S$5 set — just with one egg and one vegetable less.
Wang said this S$3 set has been popular among young customers.
She added that her stall sells about 100 sets each day, and 20 per cent of them are the S$3 chicken drumstick rice sets.
The stall also sells a S$1 Sin Chew bee hoon set as a budget meal.
As for whether such sets will affect their bottom line, Wang told Shin Min, "We will just earn a little less."
Background
Wang has been in the food and beverage industry for about 25 years, since she was 17, Shin Min reported.
She previously held a management position in a milk tea chain.
This is her first business venture.
Wang shared that her stall's most important customer is her own mother, who will give feedback on the food's taste.
"My mother has high cholesterol and high blood sugar, and would tell it is a struggle to find food with less oil and salt outside. So, by opening this stall, I also hope to provide healthier choices for everyone," Wang said.
