Photos of last supermoon of 2024, the Beaver Moon, on Nov. 15 shot from S'pore

Photographers in Singapore took to social media to share their photos of the last supermoon of 2024 — the Beaver Moon.

Contrary to its name, no beavers were spotted on the moon.

However, the 2024 Beaver Moon is especially significant because it was "slightly closer and brighter" than the Sturgeon Moon in August, shared NASA.

Three supermoons were spotted earlier this year: the Sturgeon Moon in August, the Harvest Moon in September, and the Hunter's Moon in October.

Photographers also noted that the Beaver Moon was still visible in the early morning of Nov. 16, as seen in this photo taken from Tampines.

Why is it called Beaver Moon?

November's Beaver Moon was named by Native American tribes and early European settlers who used the moon as a calendar to track the course of the year.

Its annual appearance in November also coincides with the time when beavers prepare for winter by building dams and stocking up food, inspiring the name, explained The Observatory at Science Centre Singapore.

The Beaver Moon is always a full moon but isn't always a supermoon.

A supermoon refers to a full moon at its closest point to Earth during its orbit, according to the London Natural History Museum.

The next time that a supermoon will make an appearance will be in October 2025.
