A 56-year-old man was arrested for possession of an offensive weapon after he was seen waving a knife at a counter at Textile Centre in Jalan Sultan on Oct. 8 afternoon.

The scene of the man's arrest was caught on camera by an onlooker who subsequently shared the video with Sgfollowsall.

What video shows

In the video, the man, who was only wearing a pair of black underwear, could be heard hitting the counter with his knife while mumbling.

When police officers began approaching him, he raised his arms above his head before striking a fighting stance.

The man put his hands behind his back after one of the police officers shouted, "Go back!" and "Drop the knife!", while pointing a weapon at him.

When the officer demanded he sat down, the man complied and knelt on the ground.

He subsequently laid down after a female onlooker, who was not caught on camera, shouted in Mandarin, "Lie down with your stomach on the ground!"

A male police officer subsequently walked up to the man and subdued him.

Two other police officers also helped with the man's arrest after putting down their respective shields.

Police statement

The Singapore Police Force told Mothership that they received a call for assistance at 200 Jalan Sultan, where Textile Centre is situated, at around 3:50pm on Oct. 8.

When police officers arrived, the man was found to have armed himself with a knife.

After his arrest, the man was conveyed conscious to the hospital for an injury that was believed to be self-inflicted.

Police investigations are ongoing.
