Tributes pour in for Lee Wei Ling
Several tributes recalled her integrity and dedication to her profession.
Following the passing of Lee Wei Ling, daughter of founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, on Oct. 9, multiple Singaporeans have penned tributes for her work as a doctor and expressed condolences to her family.
Teo Chee Hean: Remained "stoic" in her final years despite her illness
In a Facebook post on Oct. 9, Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean described Lee Wei Ling as a "passionate and dedicated" person.
Teo recalled the discussions he held with Lee Wei Ling, throughout the five decades that they knew each other, on topics which meant a lot to her, such as early child education.
"She put her all into what she did, in particular as a doctor," he wrote.
Teo also highlighted how she remained "stoic" in her final years even though she was afflicted with a degenerative and debilitating illness, and saw just a few close family members and associates.
"May she rest in peace," he added.
Jose Raymond: "I will never forget how you stood by me"
The former chairman of the Singapore People's Party (SPP) also penned a tribute to Lee Wei Ling, recalling how she had stood by him as he "cracked the code" to reveal the ethical breaches at the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) in 2003 — a point which he described as one of the highlights of his career.
The breaches involved the way in which blood was taken from patients and used for research, according to Today.
Raymond also recalled their lunch sessions and how Lee Wei Ling introduced him to the French cuisine restaurant Les Amis.
He also recalled how both of them ended up in the same at Singapore General Hospital (SGH) for surgery by coincidence, causing the medical team to wonder how they knew each other.
Raymond also wrote, "And I’ll take responsibility for showing you how to top up a NETS card at a terminal, back in 2003."
He concluded:
"You were one with truly high moral principles.
I’ll see you on the other side.
My deepest condolences to the Lee family."
Condolences from Lim Tean, Tan Kin Lian, Victor Lye and Teo Soh Lung
Condolences were also penned by lawyer and People's Voice leader Lim Tean, as a comment on Lee Hsien Yang's Facebook post regarding his sister's passing.
In expressing his condolences, Lim said it is "evident" from the family's photos that she shared a "special bond" with Lee Hsien Yang, and that "she also had his back" since they were young.
He also recalled how Lee Hsien Yang had taken her to Machu Picchu, Peru in 2020.
"It was so wonderful and fitting for you to have taken her to Machu Picchu in Peru several years ago, a place she had always wanted to visit."
He concluded: "She has now returned to her Maker and to your late parents who loved her so much."
Activist and political detainee Teo Soh Lung also commented on Lee Hsien Yang's post that Singaporeans will remember Lee Wei Ling's "enormous contributions" along with her courage, honesty and integrity.
Other comments on the post included condolences by former Presidential candidate Tan Kin Lian and People's Action Party candidate Victor Lye.
