Singaporean actor Shahid Nasheer died on Oct. 14, 2024, following complications arising from leukaemia treatment.

He was 28.

His death was announced by Checkpoint Theatre on Instagram on Oct. 15, 2024.

"A young giant has left us... All of us at Checkpoint Theatre are in deep sorrow at his passing. We had the highest respect for his artistry, and we treasured his friendship immensely."

Shahid had starred in a number of local productions, including "Brown Boys Don't Tell Jokes (2023)", where he played a "conflicted political science professor" whose monologue brought audience members to tears.

In "Secondary: The Musical (2024)", Checkpoint Theatre said Shahid's ability to rap created an "unforgettable character".

Shahid was also cast in the 2024 Philippines film "Elevator", with scenes set in Singapore and featuring Singaporean actor Adrian Pang.

On his own Instagram, Shahid had spoken up about his diagnosis and treatment on Oct. 3, along with some photos of himself at Gleneagles Hospital:

"Had to mourn the loss of so many projects and the trajectory of my career, but new things emerge from the ashes. I apologise that I haven’t accepted any visitors, it’s already so painful to see how my family is taking this.

Am tired of receiving the “how are you feeling today” messages, truly. I’m being destroyed internally by the most intense chemo regimen available to humanity, and I feel guilty if I don’t say something nice.

So many people are waiting for me to get better, but it will take so much longer to be reunited with anything that makes my heart happy. But fret not, all I need is strength, bravery and hope to fight this battle, if you know me, you know I have those in spades."

Checkpoint Theatre extended its condolences to Shahid's family and longtime girlfriend, and added:

"Our lives and our work were enriched by his presence. In just 24 months of intensive collaboration, we came to love him deeply.

We will do our best to carry on, and to make the sort of theatre Shahid would have wanted to see and would have wanted to take part in."

It will open its new production, "Hard Mode" on Oct. 18 in Shahid's honour and memory.
