A 63-year-old Singaporean man, surnamed Leong, passed away while on vacation with his wife and son in Hong Kong on Oct. 10 morning.

Leong's hotel, Royal Plaza Hotel in Mong Kok, told Mothership that Leong was "using the jacuzzi next to the main swimming pool" when tragedy struck.

Hong Kong news outlet Singtao reported that it understands that Leong "visited the swimming pool alone".

Cause of death still under investigation

The Hong Kong Police Force told Hk01 that they were alerted to the case by a hotel staff at around 9:20am on Oct. 10.

According to the staff, a lifeguard "rescued Leong after suspecting that he had drowned".

Leong was subsequently conveyed unconscious to Kwong Wah Hospital, and the doctors confirmed his passing.

Based on preliminary investigations, the police do not suspect foul play, reported HK01.

However, the police could only confirm the cause of Leong's death after conducting an autopsy.

While Hong Kong media reported that Leong was suspected to have suffered a heart attack before his passing, Mothership understands that Leong did not have a history of heart problems.

Hotel statement

In response to Mothership's queries, Royal Plaza Hotel said it is "deeply heartbroken" by Leong's passing.

"Our sincerest thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends during this difficult time," the statement read.

According to the hotel, its on-duty lifeguard "swiftly provided first aid" upon noticing Leong's distress and "ensured his immediate transfer to the hospital".

"The situation is currently under police investigation, and to honour the family's privacy, we must refrain from sharing further details," said the hotel.

The hotel added that its main focus now is to offer "unwavering support and compassion" to Leong's family.

"We kindly ask everyone to join us in respecting the privacy of those affected," the statement read.
