S'pore's 1st nature film festival happening from Nov 2-3 along Siloso Beach
A first of its kind.
Singapore's first ever nature film festival is set to take place on our shores from Nov. 2 to 3, 2024.
Titled Earth in Focus, the event will feature an array of film screenings and various activities, all grounded in environmental issues such as climate change, biodiversity and sustainability.
"The festival is a celebration of the natural world through the cinematic lens of captivating, thought-provoking films, photography and art," the event"s website stated.
Here's what you can expect.
Film screenings and panel discussions
A mix of films produced by both local and international filmmakers will be screened.
For example, "SENTOSA", as produced by the Earth in Focus team, tells the story of an islander who used to reside on Pulau Blakang Mati before it was renamed as Sentosa.
In conjunction with the film screenings, you'll be able to hear from representatives within the conservation community on topics such as human wildlife coexistence, illegal wildlife trade, and how storytelling spurs community-driven environmental action.
These experts come from varied backgrounds in the field of academia, government, private and non-profit organisations.
Likewise, Singaporean wildlife photographer Jayaprakash Bojan, and photographer and filmmaker Ian Mun, have produced a film titled "Our Wild Neighbours".
This was done in collaboration with the nation-wide initiative Our Wild Neighbours by the Urban Wildlife Working Group, which aims to promote coexistence with Singapore’s native wildlife.
Masterclasses and workshops
The family-friendly festival is sure to keep your young ones engaged, and the perfect opportunity to hone their interest in biodiversity.
Try your hand at wildlife photography and explore the island's flora and fauna through the "Sentosa Nature Quest", or craft clay sculptures of animals with WWF Singapore.
Children can learn about different shark species and conservation efforts through various craft activities at the "All About Sharks!" workshop as well.
Alternatively, children from the age of five and above can also partake in a Safari Bingo and learn about African wildlife through an interactive game of Bingo.
There will also be masterclasses, such as one organised by The Coastal Natives, where participants can watch a short film about Singapore’s rich marine biodiversity, before learning about underwater photography from a panel of expert photographers who were featured in the film.
Photography and ecological art exhibitions
You'll also have to keep a look out for fish head trash bins.
Yup, you read that right.
These are part of "Fish Head Hurry", a social sculpture project by local artist Ernest Goh, meant to send a message on microplastics and their impact on marine life.
