Gen Z workers in Singapore still favour hybrid working, with 88 per cent preferring it over commuting to the office daily.

International Workplace Group (IWG), a hybrid working solutions company, surveyed 1,003 workers aged 18 to 29 across Singapore to understand the evolving workplace preferences among Gen Z workers.

IWG noted that the "overwhelming preference for hybrid models reflects a heightened desire for more adaptable work arrangements that better align with their lifestyle aspirations and professional goals".

Statistics

Regarding the optimal number of days spent in the office, 61 per cent of those surveyed said two to three days a week is the best number to maximise productivity.

IWG pointed out that flexibility in the workplace is not only a preference, as the availability of hybrid work options significantly impacts Gen Z workers' decisions to pursue job opportunities (71 per cent), accept job offers (72 per cent), and stay in their current positions (72 per cent).

Some 78 per cent of those surveyed prefer to work anywhere but their homes, with 40 per cent choosing near-home professional workspaces.

Gen Z workers also reported the benefits of hybrid working: 34 per cent found it enhanced work-life balance, 32 per cent found flexibility in working hours, and 31 per cent reported increased personal savings.

In addition, job satisfaction is also notably higher among hybrid workers, with 77 per cent expressing satisfaction in their jobs compared to those who spend five days a week in the office.

The survey noted that the top reported reasons for leaving include the lack of work-life balance, concerns about mental and physical well-being, and frustration with long, crowded commutes.

The surveyees found commuting a time-consuming hassle and a significant economic burden.

Others reported that having a full-time office schedule has drawbacks, including a lack of flexibility in work hours and difficulty maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

IWG CEO Mark Dixon said, "Gen Z expects choice, flexibility, and balance when it comes to where and how they work. Organisations seeking the best emerging talent will need to factor this into their workplace strategies not only in Singapore but also globally."
