Kembangan canal turns red, NEA investigating car wash & grooming firm over discharge
It was seen on two nights.
The National Environment Agency (NEA) is investigating a car wash and grooming company after bright red water was seen flowing through a public canal in Kembangan.
A picture of the scene was shared to the "sgfollowsall" Instagram page on Oct. 24.
The section of the canal is located near Kembangan MRT station.
Red discharge seen on two nights
The National Environment Agency (NEA) told Mothership that the red substance was observed in the canal on the nights of Oct. 13 and Oct. 17.
After NEA was first notified of the matter, its officers conducted onsite surveillance at the canal on Oct. 14 morning.
However, there was a heavy rain prior to their checks, and NEA found the water in the canal was normal, with no signs of the discharge.
"The dissolved oxygen and pH levels of the water were also found to be in the normal ranges," NEA said.
On the night of Oct. 17, NEA was again notified that the red discharge was seen in the canal.
Traced back to car wash & grooming company
On Oct. 18, NEA's checks traced the red discharge back to a company providing car washing and grooming services.
The agency instructed the company to stop the discharge into the open drain immediately and clean up the public drains that were affected.
NEA added that it takes a serious view of pollution in Singapore’s waterways.
As such, NEA is investigating the company for an offence under the Environmental Protection and Management Act.
