Potato Head Singapore at 36 Keong Saik Road is closing in the upcoming weeks.

The restaurant and bar, famous for its burgers, is an offshoot of the legendary Bali beach club of the same name.

But after more than 10 years, it appears that its tenure at the famous red and white pie shaped Tong Ah Building at 36 Keong Saik Road is coming to an end.

A decade and half a million guest

On Sep. 30, Potato Head’s social media pages announced that the establishment was going to say goodbye to its current premises.

During the past decade, the premises has played host to “almost half a million guests”, the post noted, and that it was “time for us to say goodbye to our dear venue in Singapore”.

The post thanked Potato Head’s “incredible” team for their efforts, wishing them well in their next phase of life.

"We will continue delivering Good Times at our Desa Potato Head in Bali," the post added, referencing its beach club and resort club complex in Seminyak, Bali.

Where’s it going?

Its Instagram post’s comments were quickly filled with lamentations, as well as recounting of good times past.

However, a post that asked whether the closure was effective immediately only added to the mystery.

A reply stated, “We are still open”, and that “we will continue offering the same great service just with a fresh identity”, implying that some rebranding should be expected.

The official @potatoheadsg account replied to another post mourning its closure by saying, “We’re not closing down for good”, and “we’re merely making way for the next iteration of 36 Keong Saik Road".

Fixture and art

The Tong Ah Building is a famous fixture in the area and has now housed not just one, but two famous and beloved eateries.

It previously housed the Tong Ah Eating House, before the family that owned it sold the building in 2013, and moved to 35 Keong Saik Road.

In 2014, Potato Head moved into the premises to much fanfare, beginning its bar and burger-led reign.

In addition to its rooftop bar and street-side serving area, the interior of the building was extensively decorated at the direction of Australian artist David Bromley.

Potato Head is so proud of Bromley’s contribution, that it has a dedicated section on its website to showcase it.
