PM Wong to visit Jakarta & attend inauguration of incoming Indonesia President Prabowo Subianto
Meet the new boss.
Singapore’s Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong will attend the inauguration of Indonesia’s eighth president Prabowo Subianto on Oct. 20, 2024.
Inauguration
PM Wong will be in Jakarta from Oct. 20 to Oct. 21, in order to personally offer his congratulations to President-elect Prabowo.
As neighbours, the visit reaffirms the importance of the Singapore-Indonesia relationship as well as Singapore’s commitment to further strengthen substantive bilateral ties.
This includes the key priority areas that were discussed at the Singapore-Indonesia Leaders Retreat on Apr. 29.
That April, then-Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong met with outgoing president Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, in a meeting that also included then-Deputy Prime Minister Wong, and president-elect Prabowo.
PM Wong will be accompanied by his wife and officials from the Prime Minister’s Office, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Regional invites
PM Wong will be one of several regional leaders who have been invited to Prabowo’s inauguration.
Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, and Vice President of China, Han Zheng, are two leaders who have confirmed their attendance.
The Jakarta Post reports that “dozens” of global and regional leaders have been invited to attend the inauguration, which will take place in Jakarta.
Prabowo was elected in a landslide in February 2024, and in the intervening period has travelled to almost all Southeast Asian countries, as well as several international capitals, such as China, Turkey, Russia, and France.
