Did you manage to catch the Hunter's Moon?

If you didn't, don't worry: there's another astronomical phenomenon on the horizon.

The Orionid meteor shower, known for its beauty and brightness, will light up Singapore's night skies between Oct. 20 and 21, 2024, according to the Science Centre Singapore.

With good weather, you'll be able to see glowing trails lasting up to a few minutes and potential fireballs.

There'll also be up to 10 to 20 meteors an hour at the shower's peak.

How to catch the shower

If you're hoping to get a glimpse of it, seek a wide-open viewing area between midnight and dawn — ideally after 2am.

Dark locations with a clear, unobstructed view of the sky, away from city lights, are best for viewing.

Examples include parks, beaches, reservoirs, or open spaces.

No special equipment is required as the meteors, with their bright and fast streaks, can be seen with the naked eye.

Do note that the moon, which is expected to be quite bright that night, might make the viewing of the meteor shower more difficult.

Still, no harm giving it a shot — and making a wish while you're at it.

About the Orionids

The Orionids are named for their radiant point near the famous constellation, Orion the Hunter.

The meteors are produced when the Earth encounters debris left behind from Halley's Comet, which heats up as it enters the Earth's atmosphere.

This creates spectacular "shooting stars" that streak across the night sky.

An annual shower that peaks every year in mid-October, it's considered one of the most beautiful showers of the year.

It won't be the last shower this year though.

The Geminids, another meteor shower, is expected to peak closer to the end of the year between Dec. 13 and 14.

Lots of stuff to look forward to.
