8 monkeys found dead in Hong Kong, mammals section of zoo closed, disinfection & tests carried out
The Mammals Section of zoo has been closed off but the other sections remain open.
The Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens was closed on Monday, Oct. 14 after eight animals were found dead, Reuters reported.
Officials found the dead monkeys on Sunday, rthk reported.
The dead primates included one De Brazza’s monkey, one common squirrel monkey, three cotton-top tamarins and three white-faced sakis, according to the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
Tests are being carried out to determine their deaths.
“Necropsy and laboratory tests have been arranged immediately to help find out their cause of death,” the authorities, which are liaising with the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, said early on Monday.
The Mammals Section of the Zoological and Botanical Gardens will be closed from Monday for disinfection and cleaning works, it was also announced.
The health conditions of other animals will be closely monitored while awaiting test results, the authorities also said.
Other facilities at the park would remain open during this period, it was added.
The city’s oldest park, with an area of 5.6 hectares (13.8 acres), was first fully open to the public in 1871.
It was renamed Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens in 1975.
