MOE expanding its HQ with new 30-storey tower at Buona Vista, construction to start in 2025

The Ministry of Education (MOE) will begin the construction of a new building in Buona Vista.

The new building will allow MOE headquarters staff from various sites to consolidate at a single location.

According to a press release by MOE on Oct. 22, the construction of the 30-storey Goh Keng Swee Centre for Education (GKSCE) will begin in 2025.

It is projected to be operational in 2029, MOE said.

GKSCE will be located at North Buona Vista Drive, adjacent to the current MOE building.

MOE headquarters staff from existing sites, including sites in Balestier, Grange Road, and Ghim Moh, will move to Buona Vista. This will also free up land in various parts of the island for other uses, MOE said.

The new building will house the Academy of Singapore Teachers, various MOE Divisions, and the MOE Heritage Centre currently located in Balestier.

It will also house specialist academies and training facilities for the professional development of in-service teachers.

The building will be on a site area of about 5,000 square metres, with an estimated gross floor area of 65,000 square metres. The 30-storey tower will accommodate up to 2,000 staff.

According to the press release, GKSCE is "designed to be a Super Low Energy building" and will have sustainable features such as solar panels and district cooling system.

MOE said it hopes that the new complex — comprising the GKSCE and the existing MOE building — "will be a symbol of the importance of education to Singaporeans."

MOE said in the press release that it aims to "minimise disruptions to surrounding areas and businesses during the construction period", and would implement traffic management and noise control measures. MOE also thanked the residents and businesses in the area for their understanding.

At the National Day Rally in 2010, then-Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong spoke about plans for the new building, saying it would be "the nerve centre for Singapore education and a symbol of the importance of education to our young and to our future".
