Residents set up memorial for Whampoa community cat allegedly abused & violently killed
RIP, Field Field.
A memorial has been set up for the recently deceased community cat, Field Field.
The feline resident of Block 78 Lorong Limau had been allegedly killed by a person.
In tribute to Field Field, a number of residents set up a memorial with a photo-board filled with their favourite photos of the orange cat.
Flowers, cat food, and even an orange stuffed toy were seen at the site.
One resident, who gave her name as Loh, said that they had received approval from the town council to set up the memorial until Oct. 14.
It's located at Field Field's favourite spot, behind the letterbox sitting area at Block 78.
"Thank you to everyone who sent us her pictures. There were so many that we could only print a few, which shows how much she was loved," Loh said.
"Looking at the pictures brings tears, but also solace. Rest in peace, dear Field Field. You will always be in our hearts."
A calm and friendly cat
Field Field's main feeder, who goes by Auntie April, told Mothership that the female feline had always been a calm and friendly cat.
"Very well-behaved, non-destructive and never once dirtied the place with her pee and poo," the 73-year-old said.
The feline, who was estimated to be around 10 to 12 years old, had previously gone for surgery in February 2023.
At the time, blood tests showed that she was still a healthy and well-nourished cat.
Around three weeks before the incident, April noticed that she had begun to lose a little weight.
As the cat was still eating well, she did not think much of it.
But on Oct. 7, at around 7:30am, she received a message that a ginger cat was lying dead on the grass field.
"When I found her at the small patch of grass field opposite the playground, she was already dead," April said.
"[There was also] a bit of blood near her mouth, some patches of fur missing, showing something like reddish scars or cuts. Her neck bone also seemed to be jutting out."
She added that the grass patch beneath her body was "a bit sunken", as though something heavy had fallen from height.
In addition to the memorial, a 49-day tablet has been set up at a Tibetan temple at 2 Beatty Lane.
After she is cremated, her urn will be placed at a pet columbarium near Yio Chu Kang MRT station.
In the meantime, members of the public are welcome to pay their respects at the temple, April said.
Incidents
On Oct. 7, a 25-year-old man was charged for allegedly throwing a cat off a Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat at Block 78 Lorong Limau.
He was alleged to have kicked a cat and stepped on its head multiple times inside a HDB lift, before throwing it down from the 38th floor of the block.
Mothership understands that he was arrested amid investigations into an earlier case of four community cats in Toa Payoh being allegedly slashed between Sep. 20 and Sep. 23.
However, it was not mentioned in court what his involvement was.
The National Parks Board (NParks) is investigating.
