Dressed in all black and armed with six penknives, a man skulked about the first floor lift lobby of the National University of Singapore's (NUS) sports centre on the morning of Aug. 22.

Sometime before 11:30am, Sim Chuan Min caught the attention of three NUS staff members patrolling the compound.

When questioned about his intent, Sim brandished a penknife and threatened to cut one of them.

"I will cut you"

According to court documents, the three staff members were between 33 years old and 54 years old.

One of them recognised Sim, who was a person of interest, having trespassed into the campus before.

Seeing that Sim was uncooperative, he called the police.

While waiting for the police to show up, Sim took off his slippers.

He then pulled out a penknife and extended its blade.

Holding both the makeshift weapon and his slippers, he turned to another staff member and warned: "Go away, I will cut you."

Escape attempt

Sim attempted to flee from the two men by rushing past them, blade in hand.

He was spotted by other staff members, including a cleaner who was present at the scene.

The escape attempt a staff member to call the police a second time while his colleagues chased after Sim.

Upon catching up with him, one staff member armed himself with a blue pail for protection while another used a pipe to knock the penknife out of Sim's grip.

They then detained Sim.

In possession of many other sharp objects

Police officers arrived at about 12:05pm and arrested Sim.

A body search uncovered two transparent plastic bags — one containing five penknives and another holding one nail cutter, one metal tweezers, and one small pair of scissors.

Sim later pleaded guilty to criminal intimidation with a second charge of owning six weapons in a public place taken into consideration for sentencing.

He was sentenced to three months’ jail on Oct. 23.
