An 18-year-old man was found lying motionless at the foot of block 15 of Helix House, a residential building at the National University of Singapore (NUS), on Oct. 3 morning.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by a Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) paramedic, the Singapore Police Force told Mothership.

According to NUS' website, Helix House, located at 37 Prince George's Park, is one of the newest houses at the university, having only been established in July 2023.

NUS statement

In response to Mothership's queries, NUS shared a memo sent to residents of Helix House by the house' master, Associate Professor Lee Kooi Cheng, on Oct. 3.

In the memo, Lee said the house is sad "to receive news of the passing of a Helixian" and extends its "deepest condolences to the family and friends" of the deceased.

"We have been in touch with the family and friends of the resident to provide any support and assistance that they need," she wrote.

Lee also asked residents to respect the deceased's family's privacy.

She added that counsellors would be on-site at the Helix office for those who would like to speak to someone regarding the incident.

Alternatively, residents could also contact Lee, their Resident Fellows, or the NUS University Counselling Services for assistance.

Statement from police, SCDF

The police and SCDF said they received a call for assistance at the building at around 7:30am on Oct. 3.

Based on preliminary investigations, the police do not suspect foul play.

Police investigations are ongoing.
