Not going to lie, it sounds like a pretty good idea.

Singapore’s Land Transit Authority (LTA) has issued a call for solutions in a bid to better utilise video footage taken from the almost 6,000 buses operated by public transport operators in Singapore.

LTA is looking for technology partners to help it better utilise the video footage to effectively carry out ongoing inspection and monitoring work.

Caught in 4k

LTA regularly inspects roads and other infrastructure for defects, and buses regularly cover a large amount of ground with a significant number of cameras that record incidents that the buses might encounter.

The agency wants to see if it can squeeze more utility out of those recordings, clearly seeing that since the footage is already being recorded, there might be more ways to utilise it.

Call for solutions

LTA may also consider video analytics or artificial intelligence solutions that can automatically scan and detect various types of structural defects in LTA infrastructure or road violations.

This footage is already in use, but is only reactively manually retrieved after an incident occurs.

The footage can be used more proactively with new applications that could expand its detection capabilities, as well as its overall safety and operational response times.

Detecting traffic violations

Proposals may offer solutions such as detecting traffic violations (e.g. bus lane infringement or illegal parking), as well as defects in road infrastructure and maintenance, such as bridge and tunnel defects at dilapidated bus stops.

Such a system would be able to automatically identify and log potential violations or defects, record an image for reference, geolocate the offence, and escalate alerts to LTA officers when necessary.

LTA is also open to complementing existing camera infrastructure, and proposals can suggest more applicable camera types or even non-camera-based systems.

If you have any bright ideas, LTA will be holding a briefing on Oct. 24, 2024, and proposals must be submitted by Nov. 21.
