Several days after singer Liam Payne fell to his death from a hotel room balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, reports surfaced alleging that he had been under the influence of drugs.

A partial autopsy revealed multiple substances including methamphetamine and cocaine in the 31-year-old's system, anonymous sources told ABC News.

Local reports also surfaced a series of photos purportedly showing Payne's hotel room in a state of disarray on the night of his death, leading to speculation that he had experienced a substance-induced breakdown.

Mix of drugs found in body

Among the drugs alleged to have been found in Payne's body were methamphetamine, ketamine, MDMA, cocaine, benzodiazepine, and crack.

Sources further claimed that he kept an improvised aluminium pipe to facilitate his use of the drugs.

Payne's body will reportedly stay in Argentina until the autopsy is complete.

In the moments leading up to Payne's tragic death, hotel staff had made an emergency call to authorities, asking them to send someone down to deal with a guest that was "drunk with drugs and alcohol".

"We need to send someone quickly because I don't know if the guest's life is in danger, because he is in a room with a balcony and we are afraid he could do something that threatens life," the staff said.

Checked into rehab shortly before

Photos published by local media reportedly showed Payne's room in the CasaSur Palermo Hotel littered with drugs, alcohol, broken items, and destroyed furniture.

One of the photos showed a television with a broken screen, which looked to have been smashed by a fist.

On the ground floor where Payne's body laid was a bottle of whiskey, a lighter and a cellphone, reported New York Post.

A press release from the Argentina National Prosecutor's Office revealed that the artiste had died from “multiple traumatic injuries” and "internal and external bleeding", reported the Today Show.

"A series of substances were seized from the musician’s room, which would prove a previous situation of alcohol and drugs consumption," read the report.

Shortly before his death, Payne had checked into a rehabilitation centre in London seeking treatment, according to various reports by U.K. media.

Darkest moments

Ever since the band split up, the former One Direction singer had been open about his struggles with alcohol addiction and suicidal thoughts.

During the release of his debut solo album in 2019, Payne expressed his desire to get sober in an interview with USA Today.

He called his bid for a year-long sobriety "a case of growing up".

Payne appeared on a podcast in 2021, where he spoke candidly about his darker moments under the spotlight, having been thrust under it since the band was formed in 2010:

“I was worried how far my rock bottom was going to be. Where’s rock bottom for me? And you would never have seen it. I’m very good at hiding it. No one would ever have seen it."
