PM Wong has 'great 1st meeting' with UK PM Keir Starmer at Samoa Commonwealth summit
Both countries share close ties.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong paid a visit to the Pacific Island nation of Samoa from Oct. 23 to 26, 2024.
This visit saw his first time at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) as prime minister.
PM Wong called the summit a "special milestone", adding that he had forged stronger ties with his Commonwealth counterparts.
Among the counterparts he spoke of was UK prime minister Keir Starmer, who recently took up the post in July 2024.
Close ties
PM Wong shared about his "great first meeting" with Starmer in a Facebook post on Oct. 26, along with this picture:
Here is the moment they met:
"Our two countries share longstanding close ties, as well as a strategic partnership covering many key areas — defence, sustainability, research and technology amongst others," PM Wong penned.
A press release by the UK Prime Minister's Office revealed that the leaders had sat down to reflect on the success of the summit, and the future of the Commonwealth.
They also reflected on the strong partnership between the UK and Singapore.
Starmer told PM Wong that he was "delighted" the Royal Navy's UK Carrier Strike Group would be paying a visit to Singapore's shores come 2025.
