Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke said that the country would open more Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) centres to facilitate the installation of radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, CNA reported.

This was after the three VEP centres in Johor Bahru and one in Woodlands, Singapore were purportedly overwhelmed by applicants.

Some VEP centres will be located at Johor Bahru malls, Loke said at a press conference at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar immigration complex on Oct. 3.

He added that several shopping malls in have offered their premises to become venues for RFID premises. Shoppers will be able to go shopping and come back in two hours to collect their tags, Loke said.

He said that the list of malls involved in the installation will be announced "soon".

50 warnings issued so far

Malaysia has issued 50 warnings to owners of Singapore-registered cars entering the country without applying for VEP tags since Oct. 1

A total of 112,658 VEP tags have been issued. Out of these, more than 75,000 have been installed and activated.

A total of 678 cars have been stopped and checked by Road Transport Department (JPJ) officers at the Causeway and Second Link.

Warning notices are issued to those who have not yet applied for a VEP.

Those who have, but have not completed installation of the RFID tags, will not receive warning notices.
