FIFA uses Singlish in TikTok video? It's an example of geo-posting to target S'poreans.
Swee lah.
The official TikTok account of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) used Singlish words in their caption.
This apparent nod to Singaporeans' idiosyncratic way of speaking and writing left many online understandably stunned and patriotic.
@fifaworldcup Sibeh zai until opponents all blur. One moment see ball, next moment kena trick, don’t know where the ball go liao. 🦑⚽️ #FIFAWorldCup ♬ netsujou no spectrum speed up - strawarea
The video featured a compilation of footballers attempting the step over, which is a trick used in football to bypass opponents.
"Sibeh zai until opponents all blur. One moment see ball, next moment kena trick, don’t know where the ball go liao," the caption read.
For those unacquainted with local lingo, the caption commented on how pro footballers were skilled enough to trick their opponents on the pitch with sleight of, eh, foot.
The caption also included a squid emoji, a reference to the Singlish phrase “blur like sotong”.
Singlish spotted
Singaporeans online were understandably stoked, just like how we tend to act whenever foreigners bring up our local customs and culture.
Geo-posting
However, this TikTok is an example of geo-posting or geo-targeting.
According to career website Indeed, geo-targeting is a method that consists of delivering content or advertisements to users based on their geographic location.
Content creators often use geo-targeting to reach local prospects by specifying one or several areas where they want their content to show.
They also customise the language and visuals they use according to geographic location to better reach the potential consumer.
This means the Singlish caption will only appear to those in Singapore, and will not appear on the feed of other users worldwide.
This also isn't the first time FIFA has used geo-posting on their socials.
In an Instagram post, FIFA commented on French player N'Golo Kanté's physique, saying that he was so fit he could "run from Changi to Jurong West without breaking a sweat".
Ho seh leh, technology, jin advance.
