The Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) is one of the most important examinations that children in Singapore have to sit for.

To commemorate the completion of this milestone achievement, one family decided to throw in a surprise celebration for their son who just finished his final PSLE paper.

The surprise

A now-viral video shows the family waiting for the PSLE student, Tristen, to return home with confetti poppers in hand.

His mother, Chaven, told Mothership they planned the surprise to let Tristen know they value his hard work and dedication.

Oblivious to the surprise, Tristen closed the front door, but was surprised by his family the moment he turned around.

All smiles

Initially apprehensive towards the situation, Tristen quickly broke into a huge smile.

As pieces of confetti rained on the ground, the student hugged his parents and younger brother.

"Really touched and grateful"

"Like many parents, we encountered challenges along his PSLE exam journey," Chaven said.

But the family continued to support Tristen in his journey, arranging extra lessons and classes for the young man as he geared up for the PSLE.

Chaven also shared that Tristen also received "incredible support" from his form teacher, Ms Cheok, from Greendale Primary School.

The teacher prepared stationery boxes for all her students, along with heartfelt notes, which Tristen pasted in his room as a source of encouragement.

"In the spirit of marking his milestone in a fun and entertaining way, we decided to celebrate it by popping confetti," Chaven said.

And the surprise paid off, with Chaven saying that Tristen was "really touched and grateful" that his efforts were recognised.

The family of four later celebrated by having a nice dinner together.

"Our way of recognising his efforts for the exams"

Chaven acknowledges that different families have different ways of expressing love and celebrating their children's milestones.

"This is our way of recognising [Tristen's] efforts for the exams" and to show that "we love him no matter what".

"I believe all parents celebrate their children’s achievements in their own unique ways," Chaven shared.

"Some may not be as expressive as the others, but even if it’s not shown outwardly, I’m certain that the love parents have for their children is deep and everlasting."
