Imagine chewing on your evening snack and finding an iron nail in it.

This was what happened to one Mothership reader, who said she was shocked at finding the nail in her danish.

Iron nail in bread

The snack, a French Caramel Danish, was bought at BreadTalk's VivoCity outlet at around 6pm on Sep. 30.

While the reader was eating her snack the next morning, she bit on something hard and spit it out, only to realise that it was an iron nail.

The reader expressed astonishment at the discovery and observed that the nail was "quite sharp".

She took pictures of the nail along with the half-eaten bread and sent feedback to BreadTalk.

Disappointed

Saying she has been supporting BreadTalk for years, the reader added that she was "disappointed".

This incident has made her reluctant to continue patronising the pastry brand, she said.

"I used to be a BreadTalk fan, but after this incident, I will not return to purchase their bread again."

BreadTalk's response

In response to Mothership's queries, a spokesperson from BreadTalk said that they have since met with the customer on Oct. 1 to better understand the feedback and convey their concern.

"As a gesture of sincerity, we extended a gift hamper to thank her for alerting us to this incident, which she accepted," they said.

The spokesperson added that BreadTalk is taking the matter seriously and has launched an investigation, including reviewing CCTV footage and checking all equipment and kitchenware used at the outlet and in their kitchens.

To date, their findings show that none of the equipment and kitchenware contain parts that resemble the foreign item.

The spokesperson further explained that their central kitchen is equipped with a metal detector machine that is used on all products before they are sent to the outlets.

"We have confirmed through additional checks that the foreign item, which the customer had passed to us, was able to trigger the alarm when passed through.

This would mean that the original bread product was unlikely to have been delivered to the outlets."

BreadTalk is also in touch with suppliers to ensure a thorough review process and all kitchen staff have been reminded of their "strict food handling procedures".

"Our customers’ well-being and food safety remains our top priority, and we remain committed to upholding rigorous standards."

Not the first time

This is not the first time a foreign object was found in BreadTalk's pastries.

In Jan. 2024, a metal pipe which was later revealed to be a pastry mould was found in a pastry item bought from the BreadTalk Plaza Singapura outlet.

The company's spokesperson had then said that they were reviewing and updating its Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to incorporate additional measures that "will prevent similar incidents before reintroducing the product for sale".

They also said that they would conduct "a comprehensive training session for all staff members" to ensure adherence to the updated procedures.
