The incident
At around 6:30pm on Oct. 21, a Mothership reader living in the block noticed three construction workers huddled around the injured individual. He heard one of them shout for help.
The reader responded to the call for help, and headed down to the scene together with his children, to assist the injured worker.
The worker had a wound on his head, and they brought towels to try and apply pressure to stop the bleeding.
The reader also helped to call for an ambulance.
The Singapore Police Force (SPF) and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) told Mothership they were notified at about 6:50pm.
The injured construction worker was brought to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital in an ambulance.
The worker subsequently passed away in the hospital, SPF said.
SPF added that based on preliminary investigations, the police do not suspect foul play.
Police investigations are ongoing.
From videos sent by the reader, the site appears to be an empty court with some metal fencing.
Worksite accidents
According to a Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) report released by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) on Oct. 9, a total of 19 workplace fatalities occured in the first half of 2024.
The majority of these fatalities occurred in the construction, manufacturing, transportation and storage sectors.
Five of these were from the construction sector.
MOM called for employers, supervisors and workers to learn from past incidents and referred them to an advisory for more information.
MOM investigating the incident
In response to queries from Mothership, a spokesperson said MOM is investigating the incident.
The MOM spokesperson said that "a 55-year-old Chinese national construction worker was pushing a steel gate frame when it toppled and struck him."
MOM noted that as a general safety measure, sliding gates must be properly designed and installed with appropriate stoppers to prevent them from being derailed when in use.
The occupier and employer of the deceased worker is Jin Shan Construction Pte. Ltd. The developer for the project is Nee Soon Town Council.
MOM has instructed the occupier to stop all work activities at the worksite.
