UPDATE on Oct. 28 at 10:41pm: This article has been updated with a statement from SBS Transit.

A bus driver in Singapore went the extra mile to help a visually impaired passenger cross the road at Bedok on Oct. 27.

Mohamad Farezuan Hamzi Abdul Rahman’s act of kindness did not go unnoticed after it was captured by another passenger on the bus.

According to a Mothership reader, the incident occurred at 10:20am.

In response to Mothership’s queries, SBS Transit spokesperson Grace Wu confirmed that the incident occurred along Bedok South Road.

Helped passenger out of bus and across the road

Farezuan, who was driving service 38 towards Bedok Interchange, took "extra time" to assist the elderly passenger by helping him out of the bus.

He then led the man, who was holding on to a white cane, across the road at a traffic light while placing his hand on the man's back for support.

It took the driver a "couple of minutes" to help him cross the road as the man was walking slowly, according to the Mothership reader.

"The driver's empathy and dedication were remarkable to witness, especially in an era when we sometimes overlook such simple yet powerful acts of kindness."

They added that they felt "surprised" but also "very relieved" that the driver had helped the passenger as he "really had trouble walking" after alighting the bus.

"I was worried how he would get to his destination. It's sad that he has no family that can support him," the reader said.

When asked about the reaction of other passengers onboard, they said that they had been "very understanding" during the incident.

According to Wu, Farezuan had also helped the passenger to board the bus.

After he alighted, Farezuan noticed that he was walking slowly and needed to get to the other side of the road.

He proceeded to help the passenger cross the road.

Wu said that Farezuan had apologised to his other passengers for “taking up their time” before doing so and before resuming the journey.

“Being there for his passengers to offer help is something that Farezuan looks forward to doing every day in his job of two years,” Wu said.

She added that he had previously also helped a lost child reunite with her parent.

He also frequently assists elderly passengers with their heavy bags up and down the bus while offering extra care to passengers in wheelchairs to ensure their safe boarding and alighting.

Wu commended Farezuan for his exceptional care and kindness, and said that SBS Transit will be recognising him for demonstrating its CARES service standard of providing caring, reliable, safe and secure service.
