Adult saves child from Canberra HDB block 3rd floor ledge
No one answered the door when people tried to alert the family but someone was apparently in the house.
A child was spotted on the ledge of a third-storey Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat in Canberra.
Luckily, a member of the public climbed up to the ledge and successfully rescued the child.
A video of the rescue was captured and uploaded by user Nela M Hock on Facebook on Oct. 20, 2024.
The incident happened at Block 350C of Canberra Road.
No one answered door
In her caption, Nela mentioned that some bystanders went to the apartment to alert the child's family, but no one answered the door.
Ultimately, one man, whom she referred to as a "hero", climbed up to save the child.
In the video, the man can be seen carefully walking along the ledge to reach the child, who appeared calm while standing outside the window.
Meanwhile, another man was on the second-floor ledge, and four men on the ground were holding out a blanket.
The rescuer reached the child and brought him to the window.
Upon noticing that one of the windows was open, he appeared to hand the child to someone inside.
An audible gasp came from the crowd as they realised someone was in the house, with one bystander exclaiming, "Oh my God, there is someone inside!"
Reminder to parents
In her caption, Nela cautioned parents and guardians to be "more responsible and careful" if they have small children at home.
"Either put a window grill or shut your window! You are lucky this boy didn't jump or miss his footing," she wrote.
"Always see this in news and I encountered it myself today with my own eyes and it's worrying [because] every second counts."
SCDF response
In response to Mothership's queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they received a call for assistance at the block at about 11:50am on Sunday.
A child was conveyed to KK Women's and Children's Hospital as a precautionary measure.
SCDF added that they will be reaching out to commend members of public who rendered assistance during the incident for their public spiritedness.
Mothership has reached out to the Singapore Police Force for more information.
