37 cyclists in S'pore caught & fined S$150 each for flouting cycling group size rule over 2 days
Enforcement action was carried out over two days on Sep. 28 and Oct. 13, 2024.
A total of 37 errant cyclists were caught and fined for violating the cycling group size rule during enforcement action carried out over two days on Sep. 28 and Oct. 13, 2024.
They were issued a S$150 fine each, a news release on Oct. 17 said.
Officers from the Traffic Police (TP) and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) conducted the enforcement operations, which also saw them engage cyclists to "raise awareness on cycling rules and guidelines", the authorities said.
Cycling group size rule
The police said they would like to remind cyclists to keep to a maximum length of five bicycles when riding in groups.
This translates to a maximum of five cyclists if riding in a single file, or 10 cyclists if riding two abreast, which applies only on roads with more than one lane.
The S$150 composition fine amount was raised with effect from Jan. 1, 2022 with the aim of improving road safety.
Those who break other existing cycling rules, such as failing to stop at red lights, cycling on expressways, and riding abreast of another cyclist along single lane roads or within bus lanes during bus lane operational hours will also be fined S$150.
Road rules
The police said they would also like to remind cyclists to abide by the following cycling rules:
- Obey all traffic signals and travel in the same direction as the flow of traffic
- Wear helmets when cycling on roads
- Always ride as close as practicable to the far left edge of roads, and allow traffic to overtake them safely
- Cycle in a single file on single-lane roads and during bus lane operational hours
- Switch on front white and rear red lights in the dark
- Always use bicycle lanes when available, and do not use any other part of the roadway
- Refrain from using mobile communication devices while riding
- Refrain from cycling on expressways, in road tunnels, and selected viaducts
"TP and LTA will continue to conduct enforcement operations against errant cyclists and will not hesitate to take action against them," the authorities said.
