A six-year-old girl in Gujarat, India reportedly resisted her primary school principal's rape attempts and was allegedly suffocated to death.

Her body was found in the school compound in Singvad taluka village in the Dohad district on Sep. 19, India Today and The Hindu reported.

What happened

The principal, Govind Nat, 55, apparently passed by the girl and her mother in his car, and agreed to take the child to school at her mother's request at around 10:20am on Sep. 19, police superintendent Rajdeepsinh Zala said.

Students and teachers told police that the girl did not attend school that day.

During questioning, Govind initially said that he had dropped the girl off at school, but eventually confessed to killing her.

He admitted to trying to rape the girl on their way to school.

When she resisted and screamed, he allegedly covered her mouth and nose, suffocating her.

The principal parked his car at the school and dumped it behind the school building at 5pm, Zala said.

He put her school bag and slippers in her classroom.

When the girl did not return home after school, her parents and relatives searched her school and found her within the school compound, The Hindu reported.

Govind was arrested on Sep. 19.

An autopsy revealed that the girl died of strangulation.
