MOE terminates contract with Mobile Guardian after 2 major cybersecurity breaches
The most recent breach occurred in August, and affected about 13,000 secondary school students from 26 schools.
The Ministry of Education (MOE) has terminated its contract with Mobile Guardian, a device management app.
The app suffered two major cybersecurity breaches earlier this year, and an unnamed source within the ministry told CNA of the decision.
MOE will be addressing the matter later this week. The matter is also slated to be discussed in parliament on Sep. 9.
Breach affected 13,000 students
The most recent breach occurred in August, and affected about 13,000 secondary school students from 26 schools.
Their devices were wiped remotely by hackers, and the students were unable to access the information stored in them, including lesson notes and practice papers.
Precautionary measures taken after the breach resulted in the app's removal from all iPads and Chromebooks used by students as learning devices.
The incident in August was preceded by another data leak in April, where information of parents and staff from 127 schools were compromised.
