Man, 44, dies in worksite accident next to S.E.A Aquarium in Sentosa

A 44-year-old man died in an accident at a worksite next to Resorts World Sentosa's S.E.A Aquarium on Sep. 29, 2024.

Responding to Mothership's queries, the police and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted to a work-related incident at 8 Sentosa Gateway at about 7:55am.

Steel structure collapsed and hit 44-year-old worker

A 44-year-old man was found unconscious and subsequently pronounced dead by an SCDF paramedic at scene.

Based on preliminary investigations, the police do not suspect foul play, they said.

Police investigations are ongoing.

A spokesperson for Resort World Singapore (RWS) said the accident occurred at a worksite that was formerly the Maritime Experiential Museum, an area non-accessible to the public.

"The contractor and RWS are supporting the authorities in their investigation," the spokesperson added.

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said that the worker was struck by a steel structure that collapsed during lifting operations, The Straits Times reported.

MOM has since ordered the contractor, Sunray Woodcraft Construction, to stop all lifting activities at the worksite.

Lianhe Zaobao reported that the accident did not affect S.E.A Aquarium's operations.

Ongoing expansion

The S.E.A. Aquarium, home to over 100,000 marine animals from over 1,000 species, will be rebranded as the Singapore Oceanarium.

The current aquarium will be expanded to more than three times its size, and the oceanarium is expected to be completed in end-2024.
